The Indian paper industry produces about 4% of the world’s production of paper. The estimated turnover of the Indian industry is about INR 70,000 crore and its contribution to the exchequer is about INR 5,000 crore. Indian industry provide direct employment to 500,000 persons, and indirect about 1.5 million.

Location of the Paper Industry:

Raw materials used in paper industry are weight-losing.

In general, the ratio of the raw material and finished product is about 4:1. According to Weberian terminology, material index is always greater than 1. Naturally, in their initial phase, most of the paper industries, should concentrate near the raw material source.

Regarding the event of paper industry in India, continuous flow of energy was considered a serious factor.

Despite having lack of local raw material  in West Bengal , the industry developed along the lower sides of the Hooghly River.

The reasons for this concentration is

1. Presence of nearby market.

2. Supply of abundant coal.

It requires large amount of energy and transport cost of coal off-set the disadvantage of dearth of raw materials. Because of the changing technology in the later period, these manufacturing units tried to use alternative materials to supply paper.

Among the paper-producing states of India, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Orissa and Karnataka constitute nearly 65% of the total production capacity.

Other important producers of India are Bihar, Gujarat Tamil Nadu, Assam, Haryana, Kerala. According to the estimates available,

In Assam there is huge amount of forest so Assam possesses greatest potential to manufacture paper industry.

Problems of the Industry:

1) Inadequate supply of raw materials.

2) Quality of the product is very inferior. It is very hard for Indian companies to compete with foreign paper company in term of quality.

3) Low productivity per worker is another chronic problem within the industry.

4) There is acute shortage of capital investment faced by Indian industry.

In India, per capita paper consumption is one among rock bottom within the world. In developed countries of Europe and North America,

per capita paper consumption per annual exceeds 200 kg.

Compared to the present high rate of consumption Indian people consume, on a mean , only 5.5 kg paper annually .
