Even Waste Water Should Not Be Wasted

Many political experts believe that the third world war will be over water resources. While many cities in the world, including major cities in India, have already begun to face severe water scarcity; the day is not too far when even the poor will have to buy water for toileting. Buying potable water to drink and cook is already old hat. It is up to us to take proactive steps to reduce water scarcity. Rainwater harvesting reduces the strain on piped water supply, and can be done at the individual level easily. People simply have to construct the rooves of their houses to ensure that there is a distinct gradient at one end, and build a water tank there to collect the runoff.

Ways and Means to Combat Water Scarcity

Innovations have created technologies to transform the humidity in the atmosphere into water, and to make sea water drinkable. The real challenge is to make these technologies commercially viable. Till such time we need to learn how to recycle water, and turn even waste water to good account. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank (WB) have long stressed on the need to conserve and reuse waste water after appropriate treatment to eliminate contaminants. Both organizations have drawn up guidelines on how effluents dissolved in water should be treated before release into any water body, especially the rivers, to control, and reduce water pollution.

Taking up the Challenge

Krofta Engineering has taken up the challenge by innovating on how to recycle waste water. It has a unique system to treat waste water called the dissolved air flotation (DAF) system to remove suspended solids from water streams. This means that even water which literally goes down the drain can be treated and recycled for use in industrial functions, agriculture, landscape gardening, and for flushing. They have a winner in their Sedicell which is ideal for treating industrial effluents, and other contaminants. Though it utilizes a simple mechanism, it makes for very efficient water clarification as there is simultaneous removal of float-able and settable solids from suspensions in water.Good settling is vital to ensure lower turbidity, better disinfection, and diminish the chances of the formation of disinfection by-products.

Rainwater Can Be Made Drinkable

In drought prone areas, and other areas of extreme water scarcity, there is no alternative to rainwater harvesting. The rainwater which has been collected in a proper tank needs to be purified to be drinkable. You can choose between the Sedicell and the Minicell for water purification. The latter is more useful in places where there is risk of overloading as in areas like Chennai which have heavy rainfall, but drinking water from any local water point is hazardous for health.

Recycling Industrial Waste Water

Krofta’s star is the Supercell which boasts the latest dissolved air flotation clarifier technology, and is highly in demand in industries like paper making, where it can separate fibers from the waste water. Fisheries, automobile manufacturers, wineries, food processing industry, cold drink bottling plants, and municipal authorities benefit the most from its water purification which hasthicker sludge consistency and low retention.
